Mise-en-scene
Whenever there is some type of production, whether it be a movie, photoshoot, or short film. They’re are many different attributes from the production to create it how it is. There are many arrangements of a scene that are purposely used to create a specific feeling.
Some questions to ask when identifying mise-en-scene are:
- How are the props being used and what is it trying to portray?
- Why are they using this specific lighting?
- How does the make-up/wardrobe add to the scene?
- Why was a certain camera angle used?
One example of how mise-en-scene can be used is with the spooky baby doll below. There were many aspects put into giving it that scary and evil feeling. Firstly, the purpose of this photo was to create an evil or possessed doll image. We created that by first with the makeup on the doll. It has the two scars on its face to show a feeling of danger or perhaps abandonment. The special effects/ fake blood were made to create an even darker tone to the doll and to let someone know that this doll is indeed dangerous. Next, the lighting/ background is there for the eerie effect since darkness and the color red usually mean evil or bad. And the close up shot was mean to show a more dramatic effect to how scary the doll can be.
